Mercury was hit by a huge asteroid 4 billion years ago. The crater is called the Caloris Basin. The planet is named after the Roman god Mercury, his Greek side is Hermes. Hermes is the god of land travel and measurement. It's the fastest planet to circle the Sun which is why they named the planet after him. Mercury is also the closest planet to the Sun. It has more of an oval rotation than circle like all of the other planets. No one can explain it.
Mercury has a straight axis with extreme seasons. It takes approx 176 Earth days to rotate on it's axis. Earth takes 88 days to orbit the sun. Mercury is extremely slow and different compared to our days. Mercury is like a golf ball compared to Earth which is about the size of soccer ball. It is the second smallest planet next to Pluto.
Earth has 9.807 gravity and Mercury has 3.7 so people would have a hard time standing on Mercury. It has a very thin atmosphere which would make it hard to breathe, making you choke on the atmosphere. The temperature is -276 F to 801 F so it would be very cold and also very hot. Human survival would not be possible.
Mercury is all rocky, it has tons of mountains and lots of volcanoes. It has no moons and no rings. Mercury is extremely hot or cold and there would be no way of living on it. There is no oxygen, so I hope you stay away from Mercury!
